Even though the times change, what is essential remains the same.
Humans are part of nature and live among all living things.
Such values and beliefs were once shared throughout the world.
However, with the development of civilization and technology, human beings somehow became overconfident that they could control everything. Development has led to sacrificing the ecosystem, global environment, traditional activities, living spaces, human conflicts and now we have our convenient life.
However, climate change, COVID-19, and other global issues are now making us think again how humanity can live together with the global environment and nature.
At Whole Earth Design, our mission is to build a prosperous, comfortable, sustainable, healthy, and peaceful society for the global environment, nature, and humankind by applying the values, wisdom, and technology commonly cultivated around the world to solve the various global and local-scale problems that modern society faces.
To this end, we research traditional activities, wisdom, technology, and the environment from a scientific perspective in collaboration with researchers in various fields and apply our findings to modern times to make grand design of national land planning, urban and regional planning, landscaping, and architecture by the view point of whole earth.

About the former base of the Whole Earth Design
Whole Earth Design has been conducting research into sustainable regional environments based around thatched roofs, as well as research into ancient urban planning (Asuka, Fujiwara-kyo, Heijo-kyo, Heian-kyo, etc.) and nation-building. These research has been based in satoyama areas of Kyoto, Keihoku, which had contributed to make the capital in Kyoto and supported life in the capital until the 19th century, and Miyama which has remained local traditional life style and thatched roofs, and Nara which had been the capital in the 8th century. We have also been conducting educational training programs based on this knowledge.
These areas are places where our ancestors had created the fundamental structures of the country and the ideal form of the land, as well as the grand designs for the capital and the regions, which are one of the reasons why Japan has been able to maintain a country that has lasted for over 1,300 years, a rarity in the modern world. At the core of this is the philosophy of living together with the natural environment, including all living things.
We believe that this is an important philosophy and vision, especially in the modern age.
