It is the largest project in human history, involving more than 30 countries, by the international organization ITER.
Fusion energy is not well known in Japan, but it is attracting worldwide attention as a future sustainable energy source using seawater, and is being researched and developed also by research institutes, large corporations, and start-up companies around the world. ITER Project is the largest one among them. It began with an agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union. In Japan, The Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 caused enormous damage from the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which has still continues to cause suffering and global concern, and there are limits to the national energy policy of continuing nuclear power any longer in earthquake-prone Japan and continuing thermal power generation, which has a negative impact on the global environment. Fusion energy is attracting attention as an alternative to nuclear power, as it will take time to transition to all renewable energy sources. If realized, it could be a major step forward in changing the future of humanity although there are many challenges until the commercial use.
Today we need large fusion reactors, but if we can reduce the size of fusion reactors in the future, this technology could be useful in solving energy problems and could be utilized to create mobile architecture and cities that can cope with future climate change.
